- Senator Roberts' Talks: Engagement and Relevance Survey
CRITICISM IS WIDE OF THE MARK
It's with great disappointment to read the recent letters in your publication, which unfairly attack my colleagues Senator Pauline Hanson and One Nation's Keppel candidate, James Ashby.
Paul Hoolihan's letter (CQ Today, 7 September) failed to disclose his history as an elected politician of the Labor party to your readers, an obvious conflict of interest to anyone who may not have been aware his contribution was not politically neutral.
Many years ago, Pauline I lanson invited me to join her in running for the Senate, and I accepted because I recognised in her a person of deep integrity-someone my fellow Queenslanders could trust.
That's why I decided to run for parliament under the One Nation banner after many years of working in the real world at coal mines throughout Central Queensland.
Senator Hanson's integrity aligns with my own conviction to speak honestly and base policy positions on data and facts.
To see such inaccurate information published was troubling.
It is simply untrue that Senator I lanson "owns" One Nation or that any party funds are deposited into her personal accounts.
These accusations are not only false but irresponsible.
By law One Nation must place all campaign funding into a special bank account, and that bank account in monitored by the Electoral Commission of Queensland.
One Nation operates as a democratic organisation where members vote in AGMs annually. These meetings are audited and fully compliant with state law.
Our party's electoral funding is transparent and far smaller compared to the Labor and Liberal parties.
Every cent received corresponds directly to electoral expenses - such as advertising and public forums - and all financial transactions disclosed according to law.
To falsely claim One Nation's campaign funds are handed over to private individual is as wicked as it is scandalous. It's also slanderous.
Unlike major parties, which are owned by unions like the CFMEU and wealthy elites, One Nation is supported by everyday Queenslanders. We are beholden only to the people we represent.
It's true that individuals have left One Nation over time, but this happens in all political parties.
Just months ago, Senator Fatima Payman defected from the Labor Party.
Only two weeks ago Senator Gerard Rennick defected from the Liberal Party.
Yet the media seldom applies the same scrutiny to defections from the Liberals or Labor.
James Ashby is a dedicated and hardworking candidate. Over the past year, I've worked alongside him in Central Queensland, meeting with constituents, listening to their concerns, and actively engaging in the community.
James exemplifies the tenacious work ethic that Senator 1 lanson values, and I fully support his candidacy for Keppel.
Senator Hanson is tough but fair, holding those in her party to high standards because she believes in working hard for the people of Queensland.
I stand by her approach and her leadership, as both a long-serving colleague and a fellow Queenslander.
